Analytica Manuka Honey Testing
Honey, especially manuka honey, has become a high value export. In 2015 New Zealand generated around $250 million from honey exports but the international demand for honey has also seen a rise in batches of honey adulterated with sugar, or poor quality honey from other sources but labelled as higher value manuka honey.
Barry's Bay Cheese
Mike and Catherine Carey have owned Barrys Bay Traditional Cheese for the last 11 years. But the company, located at Duvauchelle on Banks Peninsula, has been in business for much longer, making old fashioned, hand crafted cheese since 1895. The current factory dates from 1952, as the previous factory burnt down.
Muller 2015 Taranaki Environment Award Winners
Mark and Jacqui Muller run a 167ha dairy farm with a leased 35ha run-off property 3km away. The Muller’s operation has been in business for over 100 years. Mark is a third generation farmer. His Swiss grandfather Melchior began farming the original 48ha Muller family block in 1914.
Longridge Agriculture
Hamish and Annabel Craw are the sixth generation of the Craw family to farm the outer bays of Banks Peninsula. They have three young children. Lincoln University-educated and highly motivated, Hamish and Annabel hosted a Beef + Lamb New Zealand Innovation Farm project on pasture management to encourage legumes on dry hill country. They had previously been a B+LNZ sheep profit partnership farm, with the aim to increase profitability by 5% annually compounded over three years.
Charteris Deer
Grant and Sally Charteris breed deer and grow crops on their Class 6 hill country Forest Road Farm at Tikokino. Their focus is on investing in genetics, to breed deer for velvet and trophy. They are also one of the advance parties in the Deer Industry Productivity Improvement Programme. In 2016 they won the title of Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year.
